Super Yankadi USA
Super Yankadi USA is an organization dedicated to bringing the finest in West African arts and culture to Iowa, the Midwest, and beyond. The organization:
- Helps sponsor and promote visiting musicians and dancers
- Organizes school educational programs for all grade levels
- Provides a resource to increase cultural understanding
From 2002-2005, Super Yankadi USA helped sponsor Master Drummer Madou Dembele,
a 33rd generation Master Drummer from Mali and the Ivory Coast.
Madou headlined the Des Moines Arts Festival in 2003 and performed at ceremonies
for The World Food Prize in 2004. Madou also conducted educational programs throughout the Des Moines area. Madou returns periodically to Iowa to perform and teach.
From 2007-2008, the organization worked with international percussionist Rusty Eklund.
Super Yankadi sponsors periodic drum circles and shows with the Des Moines-based drum troupe
Tubabu in Des Moines and Fairfield.
